Recovering from Alcohol Use Disorders following treatment is difficult with 43-83% relapsing post-discharge. Such rates are chronically high because less is known about the processes associated with how individuals attempt to eliminate or reduce symptoms of alcohol use disorders (e.g., negative affect, craving) while enhancing buffers to relapse (e.g., improved sober support and psychosocial function) within their natural environment. The long-term goal of this research is to develop an assessment, monitoring and potential treatment platform for recovering alcoholics that utilizes geospatial, time-specific, and event-specific monitoring via smartphone technology. To accomplish these aims, we will recruit and enroll 200 adults in residential alcohol use disorders treatment. Using the Open Dynamic Interaction Network (ODIN) we will gather smartphone assessments with GPS monitoring technology to collect longitudinal behavioral and experiential data from each participant over 9 months post-treatment admission. Data derived from this project will provide essential information to identify whom is more apt to relapse versus recover across 9-months. It will also establish foundational data from which time/event-specific smartphone intervention enhancements may be developed.
